about

It's formal name is the Chamblee Rail Trail, but my 3-year-old son calls it "The Bridge Place." It's a path that starts from the baseball field at Keswick Park and passes under Peachtree Blvd and Clairmont Rd, ending at the Walmart shopping center on Chamblee Tucker Rd. There is a large open area filled with rocks and gravel under the Clairmont overpass, behind Walmart, where my son likes to play. In April a public piano called "Irving" was installed in this spot by a local non-profit called Play Me Again Pianos.

On two different days in May 2017 I went to "The Bridge Place" with my son and recorded some improvisations on the piano with my phone. The audio quality is super low, and contains all the contemporaneous sounds. Birds are chirping. The wind is blowing. Cars are driving overhead on the bridge. My son is talking and squealing as he plays in the rocks. People are working in nearby garages. The piano is not very well tuned.

I took these raw recordings and applied some simple processing to make the music a little more interesting, but the sound quality remains poor and I did not cut out any of the environmental noise. It is a rough, humble record of a very specific time and place.
